What is Ujjayi Pranayama?

The word Ujjayi is a Sanskrit word that means victorious. Ujjayi pranayama is also called Victorious Breath. Air is conquered by the practice of this pranayama, that is, we can conquer our breath with this pranayama, so with this pranayama we can increase our life.

When Ujjayi pranayama is done, hot air enters the body and polluted air comes out. While doing Ujjayi, there is a sound like a sea, hence it is also known as Ocean Breath. It is also known as snake-voice breathing.

Benefits of Ujjayi Pranayama:

1. Beneficial in stomach diseases:

By regular practice of this Pranayama, the problem of phlegm, indigestion, gas is removed. All these diseases are from the stomach itself, if we do this pranayama regularly, then your stomach remains clean and you are saved from these diseases.

2. Beneficial in heart diseases:

Ujjayi pranayama destroys most of the diseases of the heart because many of our diseases also arise from the heart like heart attack, blockage, etc. If our heart is right then we can get rid of these diseases.

3. Beneficial in respiratory and sinus diseases:

This pranayama is beneficial in respiratory diseases and the sinus. Sinus is a disease of the nose. The thyroid gland is made up of the windpipe in the neck and two parts on either side of the larynx. Its shape is like a butterfly. The thyroid gland makes a hormone called thyroxine, which controls the body’s energy loss, protein production, and sensitivity to other hormones.

It removes disorders related to pulse and helps in the flow of energy.

17. Removes heat from the brain:

Ujjayi Pranayama removes heat from the brain and reaches it cold. The brain, spinal cord, and nerves together make up the nervous system. It is a complex system. This includes changes in the environment such as heat, cold, and general internal sensations such as hunger, thirst, and abnormal sensations throughout the body.

Steps of Ujjayi Pranayama:

It can be practiced in three ways – standing, lying down, and sitting.

1. Standing method of Ujjayi Pranayama:

  • First of all, be careful that stand in the position. Keep in mind that the heel is found and both the toes are spread.
  • Now make your tongue like a groove and take it out slightly from between the lips.
  • Now expel the air inside with the protruding tongue.
  • Now inhale slowly and deeply through both your nostrils.
  • Now keep the breath inside for as long as possible.
  • Then leaving your body a little loose, exhale slowly.
  • Repeat this action like this 7-8 times.
  • Keep in mind that practice it only once in 24 hours.

2. Sitting Method of Ujjayi Pranayama:

  • First of all, by laying a mat on flat and clean ground, sit on it in the state of Padmasan, Sukhasan.
  • Now draw the breath inwards through both your nostrils so that the air is filled in the lungs.
  • Then stop the air inside as much as possible.
  • Then by closing the right nostril, exhale through the left nostril.

While pulling the air in and releasing it out, the throat will make a constricting sound, like a light snoring or a sound that comes near the sea. That’s why called Ocean breathing.

3. Lying down method of Ujjayi Pranayama:

  • First of all, lay a carpet on flat ground and lie down on it directly. Keep both your feet close.
  • Now leave your whole body loose.
  • Now slowly take long and deep breaths.
  • Now keep the breath inside for as long as possible.
  • Then leaving your body a little loose, exhale slowly.
  • Repeat this action at least 7 times.

Precautions while doing Ujjayi Pranayama

  • This pranayama should always be done on an empty stomach.
  • The duration of this pranayama should not be increased simultaneously.
  • In this pranayama, the breath should be known by touching the throat tube.
  • This pranayama should not be done in case of headache and dizziness.
  • Do not make loud noises, otherwise, you will get a sore throat.
  • Practice this pranayama in a place with clean airflow.
